Residential Garbage Collection
Residential Garbage/Trash Collection - West Windsor Township
Garbage collection in West Windsor Township will occur once per week for all residential properties year-round. Please plan accordingly for once per week garbage/trash pickup. Residents are advised to place trash at the curb no later than 6:00am on your scheduled collection date or the night before if allowable. The Public Works Facility does not accept household trash.
Please note, Waste Management does not operate on the following holidays:
- Memorial Day
- Fourth of July
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day
- Christmas Day
- New Year’s Day

Missed Pickup?
- Garbage: If your garbage has not been collected 24 hours after your scheduled day, you can report the missed pickup online. Report Missed Garbage Pickup WW Public Works Facility does not accept household trash.
- Recycling: If your recycling was missed on your entire street or a portion of it, you can report the missed pickup online through the Request for Service - Mercer County, NJ Improvement Authority
Garbage Cans
Garbage cans are not supplied. If you need to purchase a garbage can, Waste Management recommends a Toter 64-gallon garbage can, which can be found at most home improvement stores. This model is compatible with the automatic lift trucks used during collection. Please note that logos are not permitted on garbage cans.
Regular garbage must NOT be placed in a recycling can. Garbage may be placed in closed bags on your curbside.
What Will Waste Management Collect?
The Township of West Windsor contracts with Waste Management for normal household trash collection. The Township's Public Works Facility does not accept household trash. Below is a list of accepted items and specific preparation requirements:
Bagged Household garbage: Up to 10 bags of garbage out per pickup. Bags should not exceed 35 lbs. each and must not have any sharp or protruding items.
Latex Paint Cans: Paint cans must be completely dry. Use cat litter to solidify any remaining paint. Once dried, place the can next to your trash can with the lid loosely on for inspection. Do not place paint cans in trash bags.
Regular Household Batteries
Carpet: Cut into sections no larger than 4 ft by 4 ft. Roll and tie each section.
Limit: 10 rolls per pickup. For larger quantities, consider renting a dumpster.
Wood: Pieces must not exceed 4 ft in length or width. Bundle and tie securely. Limit: 4–6 bundles per pickup. Do not place wood in trash or recycling containers. Large amounts may require a dumpster.
Mattresses: Mattresses larger than a twin must be folded in half and tied. For sanitary purposes, all mattresses must be completely wrapped in plastic for collection. Box Springs can go out as is.
Toilets: Tank must be separated from the rest of the toilet, placed in a garbage bag(s), and set at the curb for trash collection.
Bulk Furniture & items: Includes couches, tables, plastic furniture, shelving units, and small appliances. Limit: 1–2 bulk items per pickup

Pick up schedule: Items will be collected on your regularly scheduled garbage day.

Reminder: Ensure that items are placed curbside on the correct day to avoid any delays in pickup. No need to call ahead.
Grass: in closed plastic bags or containers alongside your regular household trash. Do not mix in yard debris such as twigs, soil, or leaves. If grass is mixed with other yard waste, it will not be collected. Yard Debris is collected separately: Yard Waste
Waste Management does not accept the following: railroad ties, pianos, concrete/bricks/stone, construction or demo debris, household appliances, patio furniture and hazardous materials.
**Please note, construction/demo debris is NOT part of curbside collection by Waste Management**
Additional information:
Damaged Cans: Cans that are damaged by the hauler must be reported to Public Works within 24hrs of the incident. Please leave your damaged can at the curb so a Supervisor can inspect and justify if a replacement is necessary.
Moving? If you are moving and find yourself with a large amount of waste, consider purchasing a bagster. Bagsters can be purchased at several locations or online. Waste Management can only take small amounts of trash and/or furniture from a residence, so remember to plan ahead when moving.
